When do you believe technology enhances learning, and when do you believe it does it not?
From those who gave permission for their answers to be published.
- *** Technology can enhance learning by increasing learner enagagement and improving instructor efficiency. e.g. i.) Watching YouTube video of animals in zoos, flowers in gardens can be more engaging for learners than just pictures in books ii.) An instructor can record his leactures and make that as a pre-reading for class which learner can consume on his LMS mobile app while commuting to college. Instructor can then devote class for discussion and doubt clearning. Such flipped classroom will help improve instructor efficiency. *** Some types of technology can have negative correlation to specialized deep learning. i.) Mr. Cal New port points out that intense learning activities (solving mathematical proofs at post-doc level) require deep work without distractions. Social media and the hyper-connectednees it brings may actually be counter productive to learning. ii.) Donald Knuth --> "Email is a wonderful thing for people whose role in life is to be on top of things. But not for me; my role is to be on the bottom of things. What I do takes long hours of studying and uninterruptible concentration. I try to learn certain areas of computer science exhaustively; then I try to digest that knowledge into a form that is accessible to people who don't have time for such study." http://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~uno/email.html
- 1) When practicing skills, 2) When it is adaptive, 3) When students have agency in their usage (not locked down)
- A key point is cultural - students should be interested in learning and should understand the purpose why they learn (e.g. to make money, to develop their analytical abilities, for pleasure etc.) If this is the case, many systems of education could assist in accomplishing the task. If that component is missing, parents and supervisors might have the role. If that is missing as well, any system of education would fail.
- A technically superior car cannot win a NASCAR race by itself. It takes an equally capable driver and a solid support team to make it a winning car. Similarly, I believe technology cannot by itself completely enhance the quality of learning. It needs an environment of learning where in students are motivated to learn and a support structure that can help students along the way when technology cannot complete their learning. Where technology can help is ensuring that the student has the relevant content and assessment tools when required. Textbooks are old school, they are like TV.. only beaming information and not listening to the audience. NETFLIX changed things, bringing TV and entertainment on demand. Similarly, technology can make superior content available on demand to the students. It can also mix it up with intermediate assessments to gauge the level of learning of the students. And of course, use of technology to automate many of the routine support functions in edu sector is now common place. Where it cannot help at this stage really well is mentor the student, motivate them and show the beauty of a subject. It is no where near as interactive as a teacher that can observe the quality of attention being given by the students to the lesson, contextualise it for the day, mesh it with something that they already know in their daily life etc.
- Absolutely- when used right along side to accompany not replace
- According to its foundation in a society
- According to me, technology enhances learning when kids can review at home the online documents that were used at school, they can practice at their own pace. It does so too when they can produce beautiful looking documents to exchange with other kids in the world (kids' hand-writing being difficult to read for foreign kids). However it does not when kids have access to an online translator and use it instead of their brain to understand a document or create one (I am an English as a Second Language teacher).
- Advancement's in technology is gained through learning,it enchances learning when certain technologies can be reversed engineered, through learning the practical applications of science.Technology does nobody any good when there's no practical layout!
- After a long term collaboration on line, VC is one of the best learning technologies. Both teachers and students get more than we can imagine.
- All in the teaching - used correctly it can transform the learning process, used poorly it simply babysits!
- all the time, it is imperative that we realize that. Not? Well, when we don't know how to use it.
- always at your fingertips
- Always improves learning
- Answered previously
- Any repetitive tasks; any peer learning or collaboration; "Special Ed on both ends of the continuum; - Where it does not - replacing the teacher!
- as a medium, not as the focus
- As a tool to do things either better or easier. It does nothing when it makes a worksheet be online
- As I am working in a College of Education the need of technology in teacher training institutions and the hands on experience is needed very much for the teachers to day to face the new classroom situations,
- as long as it doesn't take more time to accomplish the same goals...
- As long as it is used wisely
- As long as students are involved and take interest.
- as needed. research and communicating.
- At home, outside the classroom. Still, inside the classroom, but wisely. Always with a strong interactive speech.
- At the source of leaning process does not, at surface does
- Based on my teaching experience, technology enhances learning when it enriches a subject or provides students with differing perspectives on a subject. It does not replace the necessity of basic skills in math, reading, and writing, however. Students need to have a strong grasp of these subjects before adding technology to them.
- Can add information that enhances content and provides resources that present different angles to an issue. When students don't understand or seek the easiest route to answers it doesn't work as effectively.
- can enhance learning when it is used purposefully to address particular learning outcomes eg to present information in different modes, for formative assessment, to enable collaboration. It does not when used to repeat a task and when the hardware is not well maintained and used seamlessly
- Certainly. But using technology without enhancing learning is not really effective
- Curriculum in applications that enables students to engage.
- either to improve performance or allow facilitates learning away from a classroom
- Engagement just like offline aring helps when the learner can teach what they learned.
- Enhanced when in application and synthesis levels of learning. Learners prior knowledge needs to be assessed before beginning these levels though, mis-information will have Meg results.
- Enhances always in its access to info, but especially when we understand knowledge in "meta" terms, i.e., why we should and should not believe it, that it is always interpreted, etc. Tech can also move us away from understanding our world when it is presented as a vending machine.
- Enhances learning: When it engages, motivates, supports inquiry. When leads to/ inspires action/ personal connection. When it doesn't: no interaction enabled or encouraged.
- Enhances when it resonates with student experience with its features and with brains ability to take in and process information.
- Enhances when it supports an already established quest for specific knowledge, or supports the finding of that quest; drawback is its addictiv nature, when used for random browsing without concrete outcome - getting lost down the rabbit hole.
- Enhances when the tool enables something new to be created or communicated to a wider group than previously. Allows collaboration in real time. Not just the IT being used as a presentation tool
- First, when tech makes seeing, connecting, or sharing easier or more efficient--you could do it paper/ pencil, but it would be a logistics nightmare. Second, when tech allows you to do things that could not possibly be done without it--consuming and producing. Tech is not valuable when it is only entertaining or replaces without adding something.
- Focus on the learning not the technology.
- hands on learning, project based learning
- I am a strong supporter of using technology in learning in all aspects and believe that it does enhance learning. One of the best ways it helps is when self learning using video tutorials.Students engage with technology. It breaks down classroom walls, helps to overcome isolation, distance and cost and takes learning beyond the textbook, so that we can learn from conversations, interaction, connections etc. However, a lack of confidence or knowledge by either teachers or learners will hamper its ability. In classes that have BYOT there may be problems with teachers coping with them all, finding common tools and apps etc.
- I believe in blended teaching and learning.
- I believe in everytime
- I believe it enhances learning when it nurtures critical thinking and creativity. Technology is wonderful in allowing for personalized, interactive learning experiences that enable the student to receive adaptive responses. Also, when tech provides ability to connect and collaborate with others on a global scale it is amazingly powerful for learners, as are virtual field trips to sites students would otherwise never see. It's mind-opening, which is vital for learning.
- I believe it enhances learning when it supports the student in catching up or getting ahead and it does not when it gets between the learner and instructor.
- I believe it enhances when anybody is learning from it...that you can see outcomes from technology. We all learn differently and while some technology will be of benefit to a core group it may not fit each person.
- I believe technology can always enhance learning if used properly
- I believe technology can enhance any learning environment when used correctly.
- I believe technology does not enhance learning when we are only using it to consume. We need to get students to create with technology.
- I believe technology enhances in the domains in which it is needed to enhance - free access to it, when a student needs it is key.
- I believe technology enhances learning all days out without any dark day.
- I believe technology enhances learning when everyone is clear about the purpose for its use; when you are clear about the 'why' of using it - when it supports the learning and teaching. When students and teachers can articulate the 'why' of its use then it becomes a powerful tool to enhance teaching and learning. If you haven't got that, then all you have really is a pretty cool tool that may not impact learning and teaching in a powerful way.
- I believe technology enhances learning when facilitated by professionals who know how to fill the gaps in access.
- I believe technology enhances learning when it ensures spontaneous participation of students. Technology should not appear as technology, something different or special. The role of technology has to be a helping tools that must be deliberately planned by the teacher for teaching certain subject topic. Student will have fun of learning by getting themselves engaged at ease. When technology comes as a so-called special thing to help learning the topic it actually does not add any value.
- I believe technology enhances learning when it extends, enhances or enriches the task in a new way. If the technology allows students to create something they couldn't have done, or collaborate with someone they wouldn't have without tech, or gather data they couldn't have or simulate something they couldn't have
- I believe technology enhances learning when it is interactive and used as part of an overall lesson plan. I believe it does not enhance learning when it is not interactive and when it doesn't fit into a bigger picture of what is being taught.
- I believe technology enhances learning when it is relevant to the subject(s) and will benefit and prepare students for their future. Technology does not benefit learning when it is not available, not working properly, or teachers have little or no knowledge. There are still a lot of schools/districts that are not up with the times due to lack of funding or they don't see the importance of having and using technology.
- I believe technology enhances learning when it is used for meaningful interaction and not as a distraction.
- I believe technology enhances learning when it is used to expand student learning, including critical thinking and problem solving skills. It is not when it is used as a substitute for paper/pencil or teacher instruction.
- I believe technology enhances learning when it is used to increase access, collaboration and also helping teachers to create real life scenarios around subject matters to aid experiential learning. I believe it does not enhance learning when we fail to realize that technology is just a medium so we must not loose focus from creating quality curricular."
- I believe technology enhances learning when teachers have the skill-set to use it as a platform for expanding access to resources, to promote sharing and collaboration among groups, and fostering creativity.
- I believe technology enhances learning when there is an authentic connection to other learners. Technology does not enhance learning when it is used just as a replacement for worksheets.
- I believe technology enhances learning, when technology work as a media between student and teacher. and I feel skepticism about technology, when student fall into a technology itself not as tool.
- I believe technology is helpful at all receptive phases and steps of learning simultaneously the learner can also seek the great assistance to promote and display his knowledge through technology. This shows that technology helps us in both reception and productive phases.
- I believe that often it is the only choice for learners in isolated places such as the Northwest Territories Canada, so from that point of view it is the only learning available and therefore always enhances learning.
- I believe that technology always improves learning, but only if applied correctly in terms methodically
- I believe that technology can enhance learning when both the teacher and students understand how to use the technology. Technology can be used to assist students in accessing curriculum (think ELLs, auditory and visual learners, etc.). It can also enhance interpersonal experiences in the classroom and provide opportunities to educate students how to navigate socialization in the cyber world. I also believe that it can enhance learning outside of the traditional school day. Students can use the internet to research topics of interest, meet people from all over the world and even access lessons when they are absent. Sometimes, however, technology does not enhance learning, rather it hinders it. Some learners can be easily distracted and choose to use technology for things unrelated to lessons. This causes distractions, keeps kids off task and prevents positive technology use in schools.
- I believe that technology enhances learning after a child is able to think at an abstract level (after age 6-7). When the child is still in the process of developing their vestibular, proprioceptive, muscular, and other critical systems during sensitive periods -then technology does not enhance learning (but rather interrupts vital physiological drives and processes). Technology also does not enhance learning when it confuses facts and fiction as a means of delivering information (with talking dinosaurs that ride on modern transportation, for example).
- I believe that technology enhances learning when it enables students to achieve things that they could not do without technology.
- I believe that technology enhances learning when it is used as a tool and not as an end to itself. The object of a lesson should not be to learn how to use Prezi, for example. Tech should also be used as a way of creating opportunities that would not otherwise be available without that technology. I do not think it enhances learning when inauthentic tasks are assigned such as, "Prepare a powerpoint to demonstrate everything we have covered in this unit." As a person, I would hate to do such a task. Why do we think students will enjoy it or get anything out of it? But to use technology to create an interactive or multimedia assessment that helps students to synthesize and elaborate on what they hopefully have begun to learn; THAT is where I see technology enhancing learning. And don't get me started on tech as classroom management...
- I believe that technology enhances learning when it is used to solve a problem or act as a tool toward a problem solution. That problem doesn't have to be a project or a challenge, it can simply be a small problem (or a multiplication problem for example), it just has to be something that technology can play a role in solving. That role doesn't have to be all encompassing, though it can, for example when technology is used to manage a project. The role of technology can be small, like adding computational power or making pieces that help to solve a problem. Ultimately, if the solution is reached because of technology OR the solution is reached more elegantly/efficiently because of technology, I believe it has enhanced the learning.
- I believe that technology enhances learning when technology can be used efficiently. If the tech consumes time, then there may be a better method or approach. Technology is a tool to learning, not the beginning and end to learning.
- I believe the technology enhances learning when we talk about mobility, quick access to the information and in all related with brief courses. And does it not when we lost the capacity to interact with the student or the teacher.
- I don't believe technology enhances learning but ones learning can be enhanced by leveraging technology tools.
- I have found that learning is enhanced more when technology is used authentically in the classroom as opposed to being forced into a lesson.
- I think that it supplements everything that we, in science do with our students.. but almost more important than that, it allows our students to see and communicate with others around the world in real time.
- I think there is always a way for technology to enhance the learning...even it it is only used in a supplemental form to offer additional resources. If people are required to use the technology a specific way but aren't given the instructions or skills to do so...then it becomes one more obstacle rather than a tool to help.
- I think these modern days technology is the main stream of learning
- If educators understand how to use technology networks, tools, and applications, they can facilitate student engagement and assist their students to meet successful learning outcomes. However, educators need institutional support and resources to be able to collect and evaluate assessment data and to use student feedback to revise curricula or to change their course instruction.
- If it helps the students to learn the material more efficiently and allows students to be more creative it enhanced learning.
- If it is used to support the learning and does not become burdensome.
- If technology doesn't help you do something better pedagogically, then why bother? ie Word processing a book report is not fundamentally better than writing it by hand, doing an author chat ( even if it's done with students as actors rather than the actual author) that brigs the book report to a new level.
- imagine a funnel on its side - when we go from small to open, then it is right. When we flip the funnel and we go from open to small (restrictive limits) then it is weak.
- In anyway technology is essential for our future in all aspects of our life.
- In my experience, tech enhances learning when the learning is thoughtfully designed with input of the end users. Technology components should be considered only after the learning design is fully detailed.
- Increases fun, shows what a student has understood, online community involvement, VR, haptics to spread practical learning. When it fails, when the reason for it hasn't been thought about, when it just increases a student's cognitive load for no learning gain
- It is a benefit when it allows us to do more than we could do without it (research more quickly, find timely information that traditional methods would make too difficult or less productive). It does not when it is used just for the sake of using it.
- It alItIt alw
- it can always enhance learning, but the learner must apply technology and value it
- "It does when it develops skills, expands resource access, creates products by students,
- It doesn't when it is used as an add on. "
- It does when technology is used by prepared professionals and when it addresses the needs of students.
- It doesn't do anything for folks in rural and underserved areas, where they either can't afford or don't have access to Internet services. It just creates stress for the student (How or where can I get this done on time?).
- It doesn't when it is used to replicate old approaches to classroom learning - ie. early eLearning shovelware. It does when it provides opportunities for learning to explore and experiment with abstract concepts, engage with others, create shared understandings.
- It enhances it when it connects to what you are presenting/teaching. It does not when it has a disconnect and is only there for fluff
- It enhances learning all the time. But we must ensure that students have great oral communication skills, working together with others on a team with or without technology, and can appreciate nature/outside w/o technology and then come back and document those experiences with technology. Sometimes, we choose not to communicate with each other verbally, but will more readily communicate via text, Facebook, Instagram, and SnapChat. Learning has to be balanced.
- It enhances learning by providing access to courses, resources, etc. It does not enhance when it is technology for technology sake which is often distracting.
- It enhances learning if it's free, easy, and everyone has it or can get it easily. If there's a steep learning curve, or if it requires being at school to use, it will be less effective. Technology also must be made accessible to those with visual or hearing disabilities, so that all students can use it - not just some.
- It enhances learning in the classroom when it is used with purpose and not just used because it is available.
- It enhances learning when it changes what students and teachers are able to do that was not possible before: flipped classroom, Google Hangouts, Skype, Google Trek
- It enhances learning when it engages the community, impacts the learner, reaches diverse audiences, sparks creativity, dialogue, deeper thinking and/or problem-solving. If its not doing any of those things then I guess it's not enhancing learning, just accompanying learning.
- It enhances learning when it has clear, measurable outcomes and the students are accountable for their results. It does not always enhance learning when it's just a way of putting old lessons and tasks in a new format.
- It enhances learning when it is integrated with the learning objectives, assessments, and instructional activities. It is least effective when it is an after thought add on.
- It enhances learning when it is seamlessly integrated
- It enhances learning when it is used in conjunction with other methods and resources, not when it replaces them
- It enhances learning when it provides a platform for student's to demonstrate understanding or aids in building knowledge. It does not enhance learning when used as gap filler or to mimic worksheet-driven education.
- It enhances learning when it provides something that you could not do otherwise like connecting to students around the world and gives you a better outcome than you would have got without it. It does not when there is no purpose and it is being used to tick a box to say you used technology.
- It enhances learning when it's planned.
- It enhances learning when its is an integral part of the set of skils of teachers, when they (or should I say we) really know when, where and how to use it in the other hand technology does not enhances learning when it is used merely to display and mean-less animated text or powerpint.
- It enhances learning when students have fun. It diminishes learning when the task doesn't need the use of technology.
- It enhances learning when students take the lead and are seen to create tangible things and the process is seen to positively impact their lives and by extension other people that they engage in their learning activities. It does not enhance learning when it is controlled by the teacher, utilized to learn the traditional way and achieve lower order thinking.
- It enhances learning when students transfer learning to real world situations. It doesn't when students simply use gadgets for social media.
- It enhances learning when the learners use the technology for building their knowledge base whether learning new foreign language words in an application like quizlet or using google docs to create a joint plea about making the public library accessible for a child in a wheel chair with ideas for doing it. The technology needs to help do the task at hand, possible in a better way than if one did not use technology for the task.
- It enhances learning when the teacher is well informed guide to using the technology for that content and can provide the value added of relevance and critical thinking needed to assess outcomes from digital PBL.
- It enhances learning when those who are using it to learn or to teach 1-know how to use it 2-use it optimally 3-recognize its limitations. Technology does not enhance learning when it is confusing, poorly designed, cumbersome, or utilized inappropriately.
- It enhances learning when thoughtfully used to enriches delivery or participation. When lessons remain the same, but you substitute a computer for a book, learning doesn't change either.
- It enhances learning when we can get an answer to a question in a few clicks rather than searching in heavy encyclopedias or specific books (not possible to have in class most of the time). It does not when it's just used to look "modern" but that the contents and exercises are exactly the same as those we do "on paper".
- It enhances when it has a context, it does something in a way that improves the teaching and learning. When it hinders both of those, or does not create an improved result it is a waste of valuable time
- It enhances when it is seamless and applicable to the subject being taught. It does not enhance learning when it is merely busy work.
- It enhances when it is used as part of a lesson when and where it spontaneously fits, or when it is purposely planned to be sued for a specific learning experience. It i snot purposeful when you turn it on every time you teach your class meets.
- It enhances when the students break through just doing to creating, collaborating. It does not when it tech becomes just a substitute for paper/pencil
- It enhances when you are aggressively seeking to solve a challenge. It doesn't enhance when we are using it as entertainment.
- It is a personal feeling that technology enhance our learning and it is individual, how people feel about it. For me technology enhance my learning when I can quickly access information in various formats that I need for my learning and when I can access them any time at any place. Next, technology enhance my learning when I can reach people that I need for my learning by using technology, share with them my knowledge and experience and work together with them no matter where they live and work.
- It is all about the teacher and the usability / user experience. form follows function.
- It should be made available optionally and not forced upon students in their learning.
- It's not when it places barriers, or makes it more compex. It IS when it simplifies and allows deeper engagement, it should provide tools to support learners.
- Kids really need to do things, so technology that simulates things like cutting or building doesn't interest me but technology that helps kids solve problems or create new things sounds great.
- Millennials and post Millennials use technology. It enhances learning. It does not when the teachers don't allow it to be used in the classroom.
- My philosophy is provide the tools, set the stage and get out of the way so that learners can self direct and explore making and creating. To often evens that teach with tech, like Legos or Makey Makey are a planned out projects that the kids have to do. So here is an example, my son went to a makers event at the local science center and the team had all these projects with led lights like make a pin or an braclet. They has instructions and temp plates and it was geared for toddlers to elementary aged learners. We came in and they said take this and this and make that. My son dipped in to their supplies and made his own Doctor Who's sonic screw driver with their materials. At 1st they seemed very angry he was not following their directions and making what they had planned. If we as educators can let go of the lesson and allow authentic learning in Steams it is better. Kids like to make and create. I think we often teach that out of them. To much control and not enough allowing of the organic learning to occur. Kids also need space and time to create. Making takes time to build, share and remake and work out problems. It is a process not event.
- No matter how interactive and "real-life" technology becomes, in my experience, those who participate in collaborative technology agree that there is nothing like face-to-face. In these instances, when building empathy and deep learning relationships, technology will always hit a wall. Technology can act as an excuse and promote laziness in building authentic learning relationships. It shortens our attention span in this way, and distracts our minds. It can become harder to be with people in the present. I so also believe, that technology can be a catalyst to build those same learning relationships. It can help those who are shy to ease into communication, teach people how to speak other languages, and provide a safe zone when new relationships seem intimidating.
- One on one(Face ti Face) coupled with Technology is the best learning process
- Only when it adds a new dimension, not when it simply replaces something (pencils).
- output in students explorative tendencies, about 15 yeas ago
- Positive: it connects, it (somewhat) personalizes (aspirational Holy Grail), and it (sometimes) motivates. Negative: it distracts, it isolates, and it is insecure in many ways (personal data, inappropriate content, cyberbullying, etc.)
- Since 2000
- sometimes, when used well. sometimes it's just a distraction.
- T enhances learning: when the passionate and turned on/tuned in teacher knows (well and deeply) their students, their content, their available tech resources - and how the process can be augmented by using the best of all three in synergy. When it does not enhance learning (sufficiently) - used as an extrinsic reward (ie game addiction pattern), when it relies on rote repetition, when it is put in as a 'one size fits all' - it is hard to think of it being an actual 'negative' influence, just not being all it can be and falling far short of the mark For example, here in Cambodia the typical pattern is for computer classrooms in private schools to teach grade 9 students keyboarding skills, word, excel, and powerpoint. All in the pc environment - no smart-boards, no i-pads, no learning of App making skills etc. and in the minds of at least some in administrative roles (aka decision makers) Apple based is too difficult. I believe that translates as 'unfamiliar', but having seen first-hand the incredible power of the right app with the right struggling learner in the right way at the right time - it boggles my overactive imagination what one class with an 'apple-saturated' approach could do......
- Teachers teach kids to read, not the machines. Most are programmed to task visually...I want them to task auditorily...
- Tech enhances learning when it either does things that are not to easy to do without technology, and when the focus is on the learning not the technology -- when the technology is basically transparent.
- Tech enhances learning when it is no longer special, just another tool. It does not enhance learning when it's implementation It's artificial or forced.
- Tech enhances learning when leaners are able to explore it, adapt it and play with it in order to gain a deeper understanding of its capabilities and future potential. Tech does not enhance learning when implemented by learning institutions following trends (UK school ipad implementations) particularly when imposed on their educators who have no clear idea of how to effectively use it.
- Tech enhances learning, when it is used to achieve tasks which were impossible without it. It does not when it is used for the sake of technology
- Tech has the potential to revolutionize teaching and learning by allowing students to follow their interests and by connecting them with other learners across the globe to make a real difference in solving a problem.
- Tech is a tool. When it enhances learning it is because it is being used to do something the learner could not do without it.
- Techn ology enhances every subject in the World including education .But we need better Technologies always .
- Technologi enhances when it is used like a sprigboard for the learning, i mean it makes easy the work of the students everywhere in the world. It does it not when many students in Africa don't ahve access because of the poverty.
- Technology advances learning by making more resources avaluable and by presenting information in different formats, which can address different learning styles. Technology does not enhance learning where there is a digital divide, when resources including hardwars (smart phones, tablets, readers, laptops, hardwired computers), the Internet, and/or software is not available or use-familiar to a person. Associated with the divide just described is lack of information literacy -- how to locate, assess, and apply valid information. This has to be taught, and it's vitally important that this be done extensively..
- Technology always enhances learning
- Technology always enhances learning.
- Technology as a tool.
- Technology best enhances learning when it is driven by the standards. I am never a fan of teaching technology for the sake of technology. I don't believe in teaching a specific technology, in most cases, because technology changes so much...instead, teaching students the skills to use a variety of technology tools is my goal.
- technology can be a way of engagement and use of new immersive technologies such as VR. Not good when the focus is on the technology itself rather than on learning
- Technology can bring together disparate people from around the world
- Technology can enhance learning when it is used as a resource for active and self-directed learning. It does not enhance learning when it is used as a replacement for passive learning--what, when, and how to learn determined by and delivered by adults.
- Technology can only enhance learning when it used for more than a replacement for pen and paper.
- Technology does. It ENHANCES learning. It is NOT LEARNING. Learning comes from a multi-approach that centres on the quality of teacher/teaching. Technology expands learning. Technology pretends to be learning when it is absent from a teacher, when it tries to stand alone --- it must always be linked to a central course of quality teaching.
- Technology enhance learning when learners know the expectations then have enough space and tools to build their own learning building on what they have.
- Technology enhances collaborative learning much more than individual learning
- Technology enhances education in the classroom when your students become interactive with it and as a result become more interactive in groups off and on the computer.
- Technology enhances learning best when it is hands-on/participatory; otherwise tech can be a distraction or drag.
- technology enhances learning for pre class motivation and in class engagement , it enables asynchronous learning and better peer interaction. Technology enabled interactive learning such as web2.0 enhances collaborative learning, student motivation and engagement with the topic. Technology may not directly foster critical thinking and reflection unless it is designed with this element in mind. Technology also may not enhance learning in some areas especially with certain learning styles sometimes.
- Technology enhances learning if it's transparent. On the other hand it does not increase learning if it is imposed on the methodology.
- Technology enhances learning only from the standpoint of global accessibility to knowledge.
- Technology enhances learning outcomes related to investigating , interpreting , applying and assessing learning ; but outcomes related to acquiring the skills and attitudes cannot be enhanced by technology
- Technology enhances learning when (a) the student meets a well-planned learning goal more quickly and/or more effectively than he or she would have without the technology, or (b) the educator meets students' needs more quickly and/or more effectively than he or she would have without the technology.
- Technology enhances learning when it adds something significant. That might be better facilitation of learning (easier for students to grasp), being more engaging to keep student interest, or making it easier for faculty/teachers to teach.
- Technology enhances learning when it an extension of oneself and allows a learner to create, inquire, investigate, research, share, collaborate, design, evaluate, and articulate in more authentic ways not easily possible otherwise. Technology does not enhance learning when it is simply used as a productivity tool to do more of the same low level rote memorization.
- Technology enhances learning when it become "invisible." So long as the focus of attention is on the technology it does not enhance subject-area learning.
- Technology enhances learning when it clarifies topics or makes them easier to learn and remember. Technology does not enhance learning when it becomes a personal time-killer.
- Technology enhances learning when it enables and supports the pedagogy of the design; technology distracts from learning when technology is considered before the pedagogical foundation of the design.
- Technology enhances learning when it facilitates access to new information, new ways of looking at and combining information and opens up new avenues of discovery and creativity. It can also enhance learning simply by reducing time wasted on manual collation and presentation, leaving the learner free to focus on learning. It does not enhance learning when students spend more time learning how to use a technological tool than topic information or patterns of investigation. Technology does not enhance learning when it draws student focus on to cute presentation rather than exploring and communicating meaningful ideas and exploring deeper learning.
- Technology enhances learning when it is integrated in the curriculum. Not just technology fo the sake of using it.
- Technology enhances learning when it is not about the technology but the learning. It does not enhance learning when it becomes a distraction.
- Technology enhances learning when it is not distracting
- Technology enhances learning when it is not focused on the technology. When the use of technology in a lesson is as seamless as student's use of technology in the rest of their lives. It can be a distraction, which takes away from the enhancements, when the teacher or student views the technology as an obstacle that has to be learned.
- Technology enhances learning when it is not the goal or the focus, but when it enables profound connections between people and knowledge that would not be possible without it. Technology does not enhance learning when it is required, and when a student is graded on their ability to use it effectively, but no feedback is given.
- Technology enhances learning when it is properly used to facilitate understanding and avoid time waste. I think technology does not help learning only when there is technical malfunction of some kind.
- Technology enhances learning when it is used as a tool to further the learning already going on . Technology is not a substitute for sound instruction and shouldn't be used just to say it is being used.
- Technology enhances learning when it is used as a tool to help students engage with material on deeper levels than paper and pencil. Technology becomes intrusive when it is not linked to the course content.
- Technology enhances learning when it is used as an instrument for creation, connection, collaboration, and deep thinking. It is less useful when it simply replicates what can be done without and and when it focuses upon lower level tasks.
- Technology enhances learning when it is used at the high end of the SAMR model - modification and redefinition. Below that it is mostly a substitute (a good substitute). For example, for National History Day projects my students have sometimes Skyped with authors and university professors from far away. Learning is also enhanced if students are creating their own learning.
- Technology enhances learning when it is used to minimize student error, increase student understanding, etc. it should not be used "just because."
- Technology enhances learning when it is used to support critical thinking and creativity. It does not when it is just used because it is new or popular and used for the sake of saying it was used.
- technology enhances learning when it makes tasks easier and removes barriers while still focusing students on learning. Used for "rote" just to keep them busy activities does not enhance learning.
- Technology enhances learning when it offers something that is not easily achieved without the technology.
- Technology enhances learning when it pushes teachers to ask questions that cannot be answered by Google, Siri, or Alexa.
- Technology enhances learning when learners are given access and choice - then there is opportunity for transformation rather than replacement of non-digital modes of learning
- Technology enhances learning when learning is really happening. It cannot make learning happen and it is not a silver bullet.
- Technology enhances learning when students are able to show what they know, create, problem solve, and collaborate and contribute to the betterment of the world around them. It does not enhance learning when the focus is consuming vs. creating. Sticking kids on apps all day where all they do is click here and input there does not give them the skills needed to apply their learning or even become proficient with the tech available to them.
- Technology enhances learning when students are able to use it for growth in a subject area or skill. Technology loses its effectiveness when it is used soley for Social Media
- Technology enhances learning when students can use it as an optional tool. It does not enhance learning when it becomes a burden to the teacher.
- Technology enhances learning when students see knowledge they hadn't seen before. Technology does not enhance learning if it is just busy work.
- Technology enhances learning when students use it as a tool for inquiry based learning, to complete projects, to share their voice in a different way. It does not enhance learning when technology is used without purpose - as a "time-filler".
- Technology enhances learning when the experience is designed for learning, when it is novel and when it challenges the user to think/do differently. Technology does not enhance learning when the user is passive.
- Technology enhances learning when the student is guided on what to study/or where to find the best information to answer their questions. It sometimes doesn't enhance learning when students are left "wandering" through the technological jungle or when the guidance is too limiting so students aren't free to explore.
- Technology enhances learning when the student is most interested in the subject or task. It is least beneficial when it is mostly textual and not interactive or demonstrative.
- Technology enhances learning when the target audience look at learning at their own pace, anywhere and anytime.
- Technology enhances learning when the technology is used with a purpose. Using a new tech tool just for the sake of using it does not enhance the learning experience.
- Technology enhances learning when there is a human being present at the moment of now, having appreciation, respect, emotions. Only technology is just stone, sand.
- Technology enhances learning when there is ease of use.
- Technology enhances learning when tools are used effectively to enable learners to: learn at their own pace, at their own desk and reach their own goals.
- Technology enhances learning when used as the teaching tool but does not enhance learning when students focus on the tool itself.
- Technology enhances learning when we adopt it positively. It helps us moreover equip us with its thousands arms and of course learning takes place. Technology does not enhance learning when we have no interest in learning.
- Technology enhances learning when we need to address different learning systems and differentiate instruction. Technology may get in the way when it's time for real time talk/sharing.
- Technology enhances learning when, because of the technology you have access to new people, places, viewpoints, thinking OR are able to produce evidence of that learning in the form of an idea, perspective, relationship, product, etc. that you wouldn't have otherwise been able to without it.
- Technology enhances our learning when we are collaborating to build knowledge together, not just reading about someone else's discovery alone.
- Technology has a purpose. Engagement, instruction, application, problem solving and as a tool for identifying swifter solutions causing progress in thinking. Technology cannot be randomly applied to any teaching /learning experience. Integrating technology without considering the instructional objective of the lesson defeats the purpose of meaningful use of technology. Technology is a tool not the teacher. It follows that instructional technology used in a classroom without training for its use or connecting it to the learning experience with purposeful outcomes is a waste of effort. Technology DOES have a value in education but only if it serves a purpose.
- Technology has to be more than a tool, not just something that replaces an older non-tech system.
- Technology is a tool. It is now an essential part of the lives of us, who live in certain parts of the world, thus it has to be taken into consideration in this respect. However, as any other cultural artefact, technology can enhance learning only if supported by a deeply researched and valid pedagogy. Such pedagogy has to take into account the type of mediation provided by this tool, as part of the learning activity.
- Technology is an important piece of learning, but so is a pencil. Teaching and learning should incorporate all tools and resources, from paper and pencil to interactive technologies and AI/VR.
- Technology is great at presenting and making information available and skill building. Soft skills, like ethics, communications, case study analysis need to be associated with dialog
- Technology is said to be enhancing learning if it empowers the learners to think creatively and made informed decisions for themselves.
- Technology only enhances learning when a teacher takes the instructional skill and augments it with tech. There's too much focus on delivering tech as a magical tool to make learning better. Tech is only as effective as a teacher of skill implements it--not as a tech department pushes it out.
- Technology really enhences learning when it is a tool to achieve a specific objective and it doesn't when it's used just for pleasure and becomes an addiction.
- Technology should be used by the students for explaining their learning. Not as a tool everyone has to use the same way.
- Technology should be used in learning only when it is pedagogically, methodologically, psychologically and socially beneficial for students' performance, growth and outcomes
- Technology will enhance learning when it come to reduce information complexity and answering questions like who, what, and when, but when it come to questions like why and how students have to think and make deeper understanding. The technology questions + the deeper why and how = BILDUNG (german) meaning the way we approach, use and act when we are educated through learning with technology
- Technology, when utilized as a supplement and not as a replacement, often enhances learning. It does not enhance learning if it is used as a stand-alone resource. No single learning resource will cover all the bases.
- Tecnology enhances learning when the design strategies take into account students needs and when they are prepared to use them for learning (usualy they use ICT for fun or socialising)
- The SAMR Model is my response point to answer such a question. Howbeit, since fully online programmes exist, it means flatly the context determines the application and timing.
- The technology makes the creativity of the few available to the general audience
- there has to be a balance, technology enhances learning when it offers something that could not be done in another way with hands-on manipulatives
- There is a fine line between especially when it comes to socialization. We are becoming people who depend so much on technology that it impacts the way we actually converse with people. It is also important to teach younger ones to have the will power to know when to turn devices off and when to communicate with others in a respectful and rational manner, something that is beginning to wane in our society,
- This is found everyday. It's not for handicapped.
- this is right time
- Very broadly, I think technology enhances learning, when it is NOT introduced for its own sake, but has a clear educational objective. I.E. Introducing technology just because it is new and shiny and we have money to waste is meaningless.
- Well used technology is always effective
- Whe we stop highering prices of online education Enhancement evolves
- When I see my students having good time and enjoying activities. When it does not: when I as teacher , I do not have any plan or learning goal.
- when implemented correctly; when used to do something better than you could otherwise; when aligned with learning objectives
- When is clearly define the objective of learning
- When it adds something to an allready awesome lesson, not instead of a mediocre lesson.
- When it adds to the learning process and is not disruptive
- when it allows students to problem solve and learn.....when it becomes a distraction
- "When it allows us to go deeper, or wider into our topics of inquiry, when it allows us to foster our passions and connect with others that share them.
- When it does not is when it distracts, leads us to to focus on the superficial rather than the substantive. "
- When it assists a person to learn when they have no other resources available. I believe a human mentor will still be more beneficial but often not available. Technology has an always available type mentality, its 3AM and I really am trying to figure something out I'll go watch a short video and then do it.
- When it builds competency and community. When it alienates and routinizes.
- When it connects learning objectives and learning outcomes.
- when it engages students to promote deeper learning rather than a "search and find" quiz or paper.
- when it engages the kids in the activity and they can use it for their own in the future.
- When it enhances the development of critical thinking skills
- When it expands student learning opportunities beyond the limits of a non-technical approach.
- When it fits in naturally, not when you 'force' it to happen
- when it gives learners more autonomy and personalization of learning
- When it goes from tool of engagement and practice to a distraction. It's best when it becomes a personalized system of learning.
- When it improves ones current workflow or creation--even simple replacement is the first step to open doors for further enhancement.
- When it integrates with communication, curiosity and human values, almost invisibily
- when it is a supportive tool to research and find out "real time" action (as with social media)
- When it is a tool that is used to reach a learning goal, or when it is learning a skill such as programming. I think you have to keep your learning goal in mind.
- When it is an add on not core
- When it is connected to something personal it enhances, and when it doesn't, it doesn't
- When it is directed by the teacher; social media does not help learning
- When it is fit for the purpose i.e. focussed on child (learner) centred learning outcomes. When it is focussed on technology for the sake of showing off yet another exciting innovation.
- When it is fully integrated with curriculum and broad learning outcomes.
- when it is low cost (yes) and when it cannot be accessed by disadvantaged and remote communities (not)
- When it is practical and accomplishes the goal or when it sparks further curiosity
- When it is use to create vs used to subsitute
- When it is used as a tool - not as the primary aspect of learning
- When it is used as a tool. When it is forced
- When it is used in a way that extends learning, instead of just recreating what we can do without technology.
- when it is used in conjunction with conversation it is useful, not when it is used as busywork to fill time or as a "babysitter"
- When it is used smartly, as a powerful tool. Not when it is taught as 'learning about computers'.
- When it is used to make learning and information accessible to all learners regardless of abilities, learning differences, geographic, and cultural differences, digital literacy and digital access as a basic human right
- when it is user friendly and accessible without any glitches
- When it isn't a problem to connect and understand accounts and work arounds. If students can use creativity to show deeper understanding of a concept by using technology in a way they couldn't normally with pencil and paper.
- when it promotes collaboration, conversation, personalization, voice/choice, and critical thinking
- When it provides students to learn and interact in the real world not publisher contrived nonsense.
- When it seemlessly helps the learner to learn more in-depth, Does not when it is just for show -a week on a project that only produces a 10 slide PPT of facts
- "When it showcases learning and when students can follow their own learning path.
- When it has no specific direction eg repetitive exercises/games."
- When it spurs engagement with apy-offs for perseverence
- When it still involves human contact. When students are responding to and engaging with the real world not packaged bland curriculum. When students are creators of content not just passive receivers. When students are equipped as digital citizens. NO BADGES or other extrinsic motivators. NO ""gamification"" of learning. Students think they understand computers because they use them. They don't often understand how they work (coding, etc.) or the impact/consequences of using them.
- When it unblocks areas of challenge and opens doors of opportunity.
- When it works seamlessly in the classroom so that students can show what they know. It's not about the app; it's about reaching the kids.
- when it's easy to use and the correct tool fits the task - when there is seamlessness; it does not when it's just for "fun" and when it's too complicated and frustrates students
- When it's not about the technology, but about the content
- When it's properly supported by administration and tech staff it works. When it's simply handed to teachers with no professional development in how robust it, it tends to be underutilized.
- When it's rooted in learning sciences and passionately implemented by skilled teachers
- When it's used as a tool and doesn't substitute the teacher
- When it's used as a tool I.e. it's used to facilitate learning it enhances the learning. But when it is technology for the sake of technology it hinders the procedure. I do not agree to the mindset of "10 ways to use iPads in your classroom" . How would we react if someone wrote "10 ways to use pencils in the classroom"
- When it's used in place of instruction it is a detriment; when it's used to help facilitate learning, it's an enhancement.
- When it's used with OER
- When its easy to apply, interesting, and related to something fun or exciting
- When its introduced at the early stage in the school curriculum and usage at home by parents to.kids
- When its meaningful to the student it enhances learning. When it is difficult and pointless.
- When non-traditional students who have no access to technology/internet unless they are on campus are registered for online courses it does not enhance learning.
- WHEN NOT: when used as an add-on; when the emphasis is on giving students just tool choices. WHEN: when the tech pieces are instruments of learning, not the focus
- When one is focusing on working on the tasks and not paying attention to the technology.
- When progress can be charted or assessed easily and immediately
- When students are active participants it is most effective and least when technology is used for the sake of using ICT.
- When students are continuously engaged and interested in using technology. Technology does not enhance learning when students remain idle.
- When students are creating.. not consuming.
- When students are encouraged to be more creative.
- When students create with it, when they use it to express themselves and/or their learning in unique creative ways. It can be routine, writing using the writing process with a word processor (but even that is so powerful in empowering students to take charge of their writing); interactive, like creating a shared presentation in Google Slides; or creating movies to teach others what they have learned about a topic. It doesn't enhance learning when used as a worksheet, for rote learning.
- when students must come up with the questions and support their answers with why! when is it not true! For whom is it true, etc. Critical thinking and reasoning required.
- When students perform effectively. It does not promote learning when teachers do not orient students to use technology efficiently.
- When students use technology to enhance presentations like Adobe Spark, animation, putting their work on YouTube (private)
- when teachers are well-trained and supported and change management is happening at the admin level and reaches throughout the entire school (including staff and kids)
- When tech defaults to games and doesn't help the student move those skills to real life and/or paper-pencil assessments it's useless
- When tech replaces something in a direct way, I don't think it necessary enhances learning - i.e. note taking in a word document instead of a notebook. But when technology enables something new, that otherwise wouldn't be possible, learning is enhanced. Using collaborative technology to connect classrooms around the world, for example. Using the internet to research sources that otherwise would be inaccessible.
- When technology gets in the way of learning,it cannot enhance learning to it's fullest extent, but will perhaps stifle it or maybe even diminish it. On the other hand, when technology enhances learning, experiences and ideas are shared, or embraced that have never been thought of, seen or felt before - for example in virtual or augmented realities. Our creativity expand beyond borders and boundaries when technology is a vehicle to assist us in learning and exploring the world around us.
- When technology has a purpose to enhance learning not just the flashiest new thing/idea.
- When technology is embedded in learning and used consistently as ways to gather, process, critique and analyze information. When it is seen as an end in iteslf -e.g. reserved only for testing purposes or technology classes with a focus on learning a program.
- When technology is pro to life, it can enhance knowledge and understanding learning more and more details for the advancement of the society. When technology is against life and hankering after mercenaries it can't enhance learning.
- When technology is simply used as a replacement tool for traditional low level Bloom's work, it is just an expensive pencil and paper. Online textbooks, Webquests, and iMovie creations do not constitute innovative practice. Rather than employing the technology for a mere research paper in disguise, we need to maximize our use of the technology to connect our learners to the world beyond the classroom. A truly authentic, technology connected world for our learners is one in which they become the contributors of new information that seeks to solve relevant challenges. Rather than engaging as passive consumers of information that they have gleaned from the Web, learners now become empowered individuals who innovate and create solutions to some of the world's most complex problems.
- When technology is used as a tool to meet standards not just to occupy time
- When technology is used in a balanced way with proper class management and focus.
- When technology is used to engage learners through the lens of their own identity, the response can be very positive
- When technology is used to solve complex issues facing society and creates engagement or translates into user friendly environment; but it doesn't when it alienates the learners and is too complex
- When technology is used with the right approach , it enhances learning.
- When the content is based on valid learning objectives.
- When the focus is on the learning rather than on the tool; when the learning is not possible with out the integration of that tool.
- When the implementation is done well with consideration for the users' experience and outcomes
- When the learning is real and relevant to students: skyping with experts, and mentors. Connecting with students who are interested in similar passions.
- When the learning with technology can extend or deepen the learning experience
- When the novelty of the technology has faded and we use it without thinking, then we can start using it as a learningtool. No one sees a computer today and goes ""Whooa, is that a computer?! Can I try it?"" We just use it as a means to an end. Libraries play an important rolle in giving people access to new technology so they get used to it, and can start using it as a tool, not just to try it out. I believe technology enhances learning when it is so incorporated in our daily lives that we use it without thinking. Before that I think the facination for the tech itself will be a distraction.
- When the skill is used in careers and classrooms.
- When the students use it to creative new paths of learning.
- When the teachers are on board and the technology answers real need.
- When the users use the technology for right purpose with right attitude, It definitely enhances learning and also profession and life.. I wish everyone has to use and enjoy the technology.
- when there is a connection and when it's not just tech but tech with a purpose. When it's just an "add on" - like "We have 1:1 ..." big deal; what are you doing with 1:1?
- when there is a pedagogical model behind.
- when there is equal access for all
- when used as a tool by the students, not when it is just keeping them occupied.
- When used to create new information or to see information from new perspectives, to communicate and collaborate to develop new understandings; when used to work on the edges of several disciplines; When used to make the abstract more concrete for better understanding; when engaging students in deeper thinking, questioning and exploration of topics. When used to help students learn skill in thinking, communicating, collaborating and learning how to learn as we continue in these fast paced transitions we are experiencing.
- When using technology as a media for learning and teaching not a goal by itself
- when we are using technology appropriately, after much preparation..it enhances learning. If its just to spend time and without planning, it does not enhance.
- When we are well educated about how to utilize technology for learning.
- When we used technology rightly and when there is need. Where human cannot perform well technology can be given a chance.
- When you are on M and R levels of the SAMR model, when it is appropriate and when it amplifies learning. When it breaks down the classroom walls. When it enables personalised and individualised learning. But not when it is used in the form of Big Data for destroying the need for a deep collaborative learning relationship between students and between teachers and their students. ie not packaged learning that ends up being sold for the main purpose of making money.
- When you do not integrate it to solve a learning problem
- When you learn yourself online and it doesn't when somebody is leaning over your shoulder
- When you put it in the hands of students to engage in their own learning, pursue authentic projects where tech is a tool
- When you take time in planning your lessons and care in what software you are using at what students you are trying to impact then it would be helpful. If you just slap something together and try to teach it using some not well thought out software then that is where you can run into problems. If your students are too distracted and want to go to another tab and sneak in some youtube time then the students would be better off doing paper and pencil.
- With pre planned lessons technology enhance learning. When we depend on it directly without planning it doesn't. Technology is an aid to learning.
- Yes
- YES - when the teacher is CONFIDENT and the technology is used for higher level thinking and with purpose.
- Yes - when universal access is enabled; No - when a false dependency on technology is created
- Yes: when it immerses the student in the (learning) experience; No: when it distracts
